Comparisons/Free alternatives

Free UserTesting alternatives for real usability research

Choose Lyssna if you can recruit your own participants and need a durable $0 starting point. Choose Maze if its Free Plan fits your study workflow, but keep its separate premium trial distinct from ongoing free use. Keep UserTesting in the shortlist when recruited participants, moderated research, or enterprise controls matter more than a free plan.

The current decision

What are you actually replacing?

You need human or prototype feedback but cannot justify a full UserTesting budget or sales process.

UserTesting sells a customizable human-insight platform with a participant network and request-pricing plans. A trial or free test is not the same thing as a free-forever research plan.

Free means different things

A permanent free tier, a limited free plan, and a temporary trial are different buying propositions. This page keeps those states separate.

This is a fit guide, not a ranking. The right choice depends on the evidence you need and the constraint you cannot ignore.

What each option can and cannot replace

Lyssna

Free tier with limits

What is free

The Free plan includes 3 collaborator seats, unlimited quick studies, and up to 15 viewable self-recruited responses. Panel responses cost extra.

Capabilities

Prototype tests, Card sorts, Tree testing, Self-recruited research, Quick studies

Important limits

  • Only the first 15 self-recruited responses are viewable on Free.
  • Participant-panel recruitment is separately billed.
  • In-depth studies are not included in Free.

Fit and boundary

A startup with its own users, prospects, or community and a small number of focused unmoderated studies. A practical free starting point for self-recruited usability work. It does not give you UserTesting's global participant network at no cost.

Maze

What is free

Maze documents a Free Plan for individuals. New accounts also receive a separate 30-day premium trial with up to three studies.

Capabilities

Prototype testing, Unmoderated studies, Usability research workflows, Figma-oriented testing options

Important limits

  • The premium trial is temporary and must not be confused with ongoing free access.
  • Panel participant recruitment uses paid credits.
  • The exact Free Plan allowance should be checked in Maze before a high-volume study.

Fit and boundary

An individual or early team testing prototypes with a workflow that fits Maze's Free Plan. Useful for prototype and unmoderated research. It is not evidence that a free plan can supply UserTesting's recruited-human network or enterprise research operations.

UserTesting

Free trial only

What is free

UserTesting publishes request-pricing plans and offers a trial or one free website test path for evaluation, not a free-forever plan.

Capabilities

Video-first human insights, Global participant network, Unmoderated tests, Moderated conversations, Enterprise research controls

Important limits

  • Plan pricing is customized and requires a request.
  • Participant access and enterprise capabilities are not represented by a permanent free tier.

Fit and boundary

Teams that need recruited participants, moderated sessions, or enterprise-scale human insight and can fund the workflow. The incumbent remains the better fit when participant recruitment and breadth of research operations matter more than a $0 starting point.

Startup guidance

What changes when budget and sample are small?

  • The cheapest research plan is not useful if you have no participant access. A startup with a customer list or active community can make Lyssna's self-recruited limit useful; a startup without one may need to budget for panel responses.
  • Use a trial to validate workflow, not to claim a sustainable free research operation. Maze's premium trial and UserTesting's evaluation path are time-bounded.
  • Start with one decision and one test. More tools do not compensate for a vague research question or a sample that cannot represent the audience you need to understand.

When not to switch

The free option is not always the right option

  • Keep UserTesting in consideration when recruited participants, moderated work, global reach, or enterprise controls are the actual requirement.
  • Do not choose a free prototype-testing plan when the question is about a live landing page's page conditions. Usability feedback and page diagnosis answer different questions.

Where Nebula fits

Evidence about behavior is not diagnosis

User research can reveal what people say, attempt, or understand in a study. Nebula audits the live landing page for observable conditions. The evidence types complement each other and should not be presented as interchangeable.
